Everything You Need to Know About ParaSport Ontario

ParaSport Ontario provides opportunities for members of the disability community to engage and participate in both recreational and competitive sport programs and activities to improve the physical function and quality of life. Encouraging involvement and ensuring everyBODY can take part in active living is their goal. At Niagara Prosthetics and Orthotics, we highly support this movement and want to take this opportunity to further inform you on their amazing services!

Sports and Clubs

ParaSport Ontario offers a variety of sports – far too many for us to include in this brief blog, but you can see the full list on their website! For now, we’ll give you a brief summary of some of our winter favourites that are currently in season:

skiing made accessible to people with disabilities with parasport ontarioAlpine Skiing – Dedicated to skiers with all types of disabilities! Adaptive equipment and assistance options include: sit-skis, outriggers, long poles, snow sliders, guide skiers, accompany downhillers (for the visually impaired) and more!

Amputee Hockey – A fan favourite! Amputee hockey allows hockey lovers of all types to enjoy the sport physically too. Self-esteem, confidence, and physical conditioning are some of the perks of participating.

Nordic Skiing – An exciting fitness and style activity made for everyBODY! Get competitive with races distancing from 1 – 20 kilometers and relays.

Like stated previously, they offer a large variety of sports and activities, not just the three we chose to mention! ParaSport Ontario’s list of available activities continues to grow as they find new ways to make these sports and activities accessible to all. You are bound to find something just right for you!

Programs

With ParaSport Ontario’s TRY ME sessions, you are able to participate in adaptive sports, hosted by program’s Athlete Ambassadors. The TRY ME postcards, posters, and resources give newcomers the opportunity to try out new activities that are good for their body and health, while also connecting with others and building relationships in the process.

The Importance of Being Active

Being physically active is an essential, especially for those with disabilities. Physical activities ensure your your body remains healthy and strong but it also helps socially and psychologically as well.

The power of sports and physically demanding hobbies and activities offers benefits such as: self-esteem, confidence, improved muscle and bone health, weight control, assist in combating health conditions, diseases, and so much more. Most importantly, being active is fun and fulfilling. We urge you to challenge yourself!
